Emotional intelligence. Most emotional situations remain just below the level of conscious awareness, but people actively try to be more sensitive to these hidden emotions when making a decision (Pham, 2004). This is one reason Archer should go with his intuition which is made up emotions and a nonconscious analytic process (Agor, 1986).

Kessel should hire Archer because it would be a huge help for the company and it could also increase Kessel’s referent power and will add more expert power to the position. If Kessel hires an external applicant it could backfire since they are an outsider and Archer is admired by those inside and outside the company and it could decrease his referent power. I think Archer should be offered a salary of $140,000, this is more than Archer is expecting and will show appreciation for the loyalty to the company. This would leave enough money to provide raises for the project managers who are long overdue for a raise. The money remaining from the $200,000 could be set aside for Archer to use to hire an assistant or as a bonus or commission if the organization reaches preset revenue goals. I would expect Archer to accept this offer because it is higher than expected, does not have travel, would be the best career move and allow for a personal life away from work. Social power was used best by Archer proving a commitment to the company and its interest before personal interests. Handling a difficult situation without complaining because it would help Retailmax.
