- The expectation is that you will have read widely and deeply in order to inform your report with academic content
- It is important that you acknowledge other people’s work so that the reader can easily identify the item of work that is being referred to, for this report use the Harvard referencing system
- It is very important that any sources you use are acknowledged and attributed correctly in order to avoid plagiarism
Bibliography: you should always provide a bibliography
- A bibliography is a list of the materials you have read and consulted in constructing the content of the report and therefore provides clear evidence on the validity of the information presented in the report
- By including a bibliography you enable the reader to follow up any reference made in the report. In order to allow the reader to do this the author name and date referenced in the main sections of the report (in text reference) should form a link between the text and the bibliography
Appendices: appendices contain any supplementary material
- Any material that is needed in supporting the main sections of the report but is not necessarily essential to the central aspects of the report should be contained in the appendices
- Any material which is included in the appendices should be referred to in the main sections of the report, if this is not the case then the material should not be included in the appendices
- When considering what to include in the appendices consider that if the material was included in the main sections of the report would it disrupt the flow and organisation of the report and, would it detract from the main aspects, facts and arguments being presented. If this is the case then it would be better to include it in the appendices
- Make sure that any appendices are well signposted in the main report i.e. Appendix 1,2, 3 and so on or Appendix A, B, C and so on
- It is a mistake to include too many appendices within the main sections of the report and those that are included should be clearly referred to in the main sections of the report
